Hurricane Sandy, October’s 2012 super storm, hit New Jersey hard causing many power outages, damaged and lost homes, as well as lost lives. “New Jersey was the hardest hit state with about 2.5 million customers [out of power], about 62 percent of the state total (DiSavino, 2012). What once was a famous board walk is now a bunch of twisted metal buried under multiple feet of water. Not only is the boardwalk gone, but tens of thousands of homes and businesses were damaged if not completely destroyed. Nearly 500 buildings are entirely wiped out and “an additional 5,000 structures suffered major damage from flooding or high winds, and some 24,000 were seen with minor damage” (Sagara, 2012). A total of 117 deaths were reported in the US and 69 more deaths in Canada and the Caribbean due to Hurricane Sandy, 34 of which were in New Jersey (Hurricane Sandy Fast Facts, 2013).
